Memory Address Space from Bus Width

Microprocessors rely on the width of their address bus to determine the maximum amount of memory they can natively address.

A custom embedded processor features an address bus A[23:0] and a data bus D[15:0]. Memory is word-addressable, meaning each unique address points to a single 16-bit word rather than an 8-bit byte.

Calculate the total number of addressable locations and the maximum memory capacity in bytes.

Constraints

  • Address bus width is exactly 24 bits.
  • Word size is exactly 16 bits.
  • 1 KB equals 1024 Bytes.
  • 1 MB equals 1024 KB.
  • 1 GB equals 1024 MB.
