Minterm and Maxterm Are Complements of Each Other

MediumLogic CircuitAnalyze

Boolean algebra duality forms the mathematical foundation for logic synthesis tools optimizing standard cell usage. The conversion between Sum-of-Products (SOP) and Product-of-Sums (POS) forms relies entirely on the structural relationship between minterms and maxterms.

A three-variable logic system uses variables A, B, and C. The minterm for index 5 is m5 = AB'C. The corresponding maxterm for the exact same index is M5.

Formulate the Boolean expression for M5. Evaluate the algebraic relationships resulting from m5 * M5 and m5 + M5. Determine the universal complementary relationship between any minterm and maxterm sharing an identical index.

Constraints

  • Assume standard binary indexing where A is the most significant bit and C is the least significant bit.
  • Use standard Boolean notation: + for OR, * or adjacency for AND, and ' for NOT.
  • Evaluate expressions algebraically rather than relying on truth table expansion.
