D to T Conversion
Counters and frequency dividers rely on toggle flip-flops to halve clock frequencies, but ASIC standard cell libraries frequently only provide D-type flip-flops. Converting a standard D flip-flop into a T flip-flop requires deriving the excitation logic to map the desired toggle behavior to the data input.
Implement a T flip-flop with input T, clock clk, and output Q. The circuit must toggle its state when T is 1 and hold its state when T is 0 on the rising edge of clk. Derive the combinational logic for the D input using the excitation table below.
| T | Q_current | Q_next | D | |-----|-------------|----------|-----| | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | | 1 | 0 | 1 | 1 | | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 |
Constraints
- Use exactly one D flip-flop.
- Implement the excitation logic using a single combinational logic gate.
- Connect the output of the combinational logic directly to the
Dinput.
