DFF: Clock-to-Q Propagation Delay on Waveform

A positive-edge-triggered D flip-flop captures the value of D at the LOW-to-HIGH transition of CLK. The output Q does not update immediately: it has a clock-to-Q propagation delay of exactly 4 time steps.

Three signals are shown: CLK (clock), D (data input), and Q (output, initially 0).

Trace Q across all 16 time steps.

Constraints

  • The output Q must remain stable during the propagation delay window following the clock edge.
  • Transitions drawn exactly at the clock edge violate the delay constraint and are incorrect.
